For me it means being quiet at times and just listening and watching. Learning this information of the students just by listening. I can't learn things from my students if I am talking all the time. It also means if then have said something interesting, that I ask about what they said so they can build on it. Becasue its those small conversations where sometimes random things will be talked about but it will help me learn about there interests and home lives so that I can use that information in the classroom. Sometimes it can mean listening to them vent, or ramble, and just listening to them that way if they have an issue or a question they feel comfortable coming to me. Sometimes it means asking for a word in another language and showing them that if they add more detail, even if I don't know a word I can still figure out what they are writing about based on the detail. Demonstrating how this can apply to when they read and how it can be used in their writing. It also lets them know that if they don't know a word in one language but in another, to use the term. This also lets students know that if they have another language they use, that they can use it. Its not something they should feel they have to hide.
