Fraction Unit Plan Goals

One of my goals for my unit plan is students will be able to add and subtract fractions with like denominators and justify how they got their answers. I really like this goal because it is very closely related to the essential questions that I have created and the standards for the unit. The goal is very straightforward and easy for the students to understand when they hear the goal and it is something that should be achievable by every student in the class. However, reflecting back on this goal and now looking at UBD effective goal framework. I would like to tweak my goal a little bit. Looking at the framework it is very clear, relevant, and a measurable goal. However, I did not state how it would be measured, which is something that should be included so that students are aware of what the success of this goal looks like. This goal may be more challenging for some students more than others. I would like to adjust the goal a bit so it has room to challenge the students who find this goal challenging as it is and for the students who may find it to be easy, find a way to make it more challenging for those students. The goal also does not state a timeframe, however, a time frame would be extremely beneficial since this is one of the first lessons in the unit. If students do not grasp this concept they will find it quite challenging to move on to the next lessons since they are all very closely connected. It was a great opportunity to reflect upon the goals and other goals that I created to see how I could adjust them to best meet the needs of my students and help them attain these goals to the best of their ability.
