Cook Chapter 1 Part 2
Goal: By the end of the unit, I will understand how literary elements like symbolism, theme, conflicts, and character traits impact a story.
This goal is a broad scope that can be used on different texts. With this goal, the texts could focus on music, video games, reading, sports, and the other interests from the context for learning. In addition, digital versions of the text would be available so students can use google read for their accommodations.
For assessment, I would plan to incorporate writing, multiple choice, and discussion responses. Students would write paragraphs about different aspect of the text such as conflict and theme to analyze the connections between the elements. Multiple choice and discussion questions would focus on this same connection.
This goal connects to all the language demands. The assessment options allow for reading, writing, and speaking demands to be demonstrated. In addition, students would have the opportunity to listen to the responses of their peers in the unit.
The activities with texts would ask students to analyze different literary elements, identify elements and figurative language, determine the impact of the elements on meaning, and differentiate between literal and figurative language.
The goal comes specifically from the Colorado state standards for reading. For the sixth-grade students, the standards indicate that students will analyze elements to make meaning of texts as well as determining the meaning of words and phrases.
The most important thing I have needed to consider while constructing the unit plan is remembering what students will be learning by the end. With this, I have planned the objectives and goals around the idea of connecting their reading and writing skills together to ensure the students are meeting the grade level standards.
Building all of these ideas in the unit plan has helped shape what the lessons will become. Looking at the learning objectives through the lens of what students will be learning has sparked ideas on how to get students engaged in the goals.
