One goal I have for my students is understanding the importance of the reproduction of plants and a real world basis. This connects to my students specifically because they are the newest generation. Climate change is real and it is something that we need to be teaching our students about. If they foster an understanding of the reproduction of plants they can help to better our world around concepts of climate change.
I would assess this by asking my students to complete a draw talk of how reproduction of plants occur. There are multiple ways this can happen, I would ask them to draw as many ways they can.
The students will be learning about the concepts of propagation many different ways. However, I feel the most engaging portion of this unit is the visual component of learning about propagation. This requires little language demand. Students will be able to understand how propagation works by carrying out their experiment.
The cognitive demand in this unit will require students to think about how plants reproduce and observe it.
My unit relates most closely to life science standards. One standard in 4th grade life science is “Students can use the full range of science and engineering practices to make sense of natural phenomena and solve problems that require understanding how individual organisms are configured and how these structures function to support life, growth, behavior and reproduction.”
I believe the most important thing I need to consider when planning this unit is ensuring that everything in the unit flows well and build off of eachother.
Unit planning connects to lesson planning because it is a smaller portion that makes up a unit.
