Chapter 1, Part 2
When it comes to my unit plan, I really prioritized creating ideas that would draw in and engage young readers. When I was in third grade, reading for pleasure was more common because iPads and the like were not as well spread. I loved Percy Jackson, and because of that, I fell down a rabbit hole of every other mythology-related thing I could find and consume. I want to light that fire, that desire for knowledge in my students. I thought by having the final project be a graphic novel, something that kids enjoy reading more than the more classic novel (or at least that's what I've noticed my my current class), I'm hoping to build connections to material that they enjoy and hopefully creating a domino effect. Although graphic novels are not explicitly mentioned in the third-grade literacy standards, several standards feed in nicely. I think the most important thing I had to keep in mind was the bigger picture. I have a tendency to get wrapped up in the small stuff and not look at how things work together. I definitely had to take the time to put the image together rather than just speeding through and trying to get a lot done right away.
